It is one title of a long seller series written by Catherine Storr, originally printed in 1957. I read only this title, though.
Wolf thinks and talks and tries very well but he always fails. He is a wolf and only wants to eat fresh meat, but Polly is clever enough to escape in elegant way. phew.
It reminds of me a Sasaki Maki’s work, 「なぞなぞライオン」. A lion tries to eat a girl, but he cannot, becvause the girl can think fast and beats the lion with many fun riddles.

Polly sometimes felt sorry for the Wolf because he always made stupid mistakes, so she talked him politely, and even treated him a delicious ice-cream on a crazy hot summer day. She seems like the Wolf’s mother or wise wife….,yes, she was a good care-taker of his.
But once Polly was really scared when the Wolf kidnapped her little sister. She had to think hard how she could help her pretty and innocent sister from the violent meat eater.
And then, she found out something incredible. I’m not going to describe it here for someone who haven’t read it yet.
